Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is widely considered the black sleep of the long running franchise, thanks to the many changes in gameplay. It’s a side-scroller that deviates from the action-adventure formula the first title established and firmly entrenches itself into RPG mechanics and gameplay — essentially the antithesis to any other Zelda title in the series.
Despite this, there are still many fans of the game including Anders Gullmarsvik, a pixel artist and game developer who created an animated mockup of a possible dungeon scene using pixel art:

As you can see, from the lighting to the physics of Link’s clothes to the forefront and background animations and details, this is a true work of art. Considering his work on Songs of Conquest, turn-based classic adventure strategy game, it makes sense as to how he could create something so gorgeous and fluid. Not to mention how refreshing it is to see tributes to this oft overlooked Legend of Zelda title.
Back in September the winner for an official Link’s Awakening fanworks contest was revealed, with some incredible submissions from plenty of talented artists. And if you want something incredible from outside this contest, there’s this incredible 3D printed recreation of Koholint Island from the game. The artist even provides a tutorial at the end of their video in case anyone else wanted to make one for themselves.
There are of course some other amazing fan works from other Zelda titles that fans have created to celebrate the franchise as a whole. Some other works include Link’s house from Breath of the Wild faithfully created using Lego blocks, this lovely Sheikah runes phone charger, art of Twilight Princess meets Breath of the Wild, fanart of Link in the vibrant forest from Majora’s Mask, a recreation of the Breath of the Wild lantern, a bottle of Lon Lon milk from Ocarina of Time, and an alarm clock that plays A Link to the Past‘s theme.
The latest entry in the franchise, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, is out now for Nintendo Switch and you can read our review of the game here. According to our reviewer, Link’s Awakening is a remarkable remake of one of the more overlooked titles in the Legend of Zelda franchise.
