The past week was a big one for developer and publisher Yacht Club Games, most well-known for Shovel Knight, as the company earlier this week shared details on a number of new projects that it has in the works. Among those was the announcement of its upcoming puzzle game Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon that brings its titular Shovel Knight into a new genre, along with the development of new IP. While details on what Yacht Club is working on next are vague, the studio does seem to have its mind on continuing to expand on the Shovel Knight series and looking ahead to next-gen consoles in the future.
Speaking in an interview at PAX East, Yacht Club Games artist Sandy Gordon shared a bit more on what to expect from the developer and publisher from the future in terms of Shovel Knight and next-gen consoles, following the studio’s second Yacht Club Games Presents broadcast earlier this week.
Specifically, Gordon expressed that while development on Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove and “that entire saga of games is complete,” he stated that “this is definitely not the end of Shovel Knight.” Gordon said that alongside the studio’s projects in the Shovel Knight franchise currently in development like Pocket Dungeon and Dig, he explained that “we hope for a lot more Shovel Knight down the road,” which could potentially include a proper Shovel Knight 2. Specifically, Gordon explained that the studio is “absolutely” considering a sequel and that he “is sure that’ll happen at some point: it’s something we talk about a lot.”
In addition to the recent developments around Shovel Knight, Gordon expressed that the studio is also looking ahead towards the upcoming arrival of the next-generation consoles, the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Though Gordon couldn’t confirm exact details on what the studio may have in mind for what it may develop for next-gen systems, he stated that Yacht Club does have the prospects of new consoles in mind. He explained that “I can’t confirm if we’re doing anything that’s super ‘high-fidelity,’ but we’re definitely thinking about it and always do our best to bring quality content.”
Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is available now on consoles, handhelds, PC, and other platforms, with Shovel Knight Dig and Pocket Dungeon currently in development.
