In 2020, Microsoft surely made big progress in branching out its presence of gaming arm in Eastern Asian countries, and also tried to bring more games from the Japanese developers to the Xbox Game Pass library. They launched Xbox Game Pass in Japan, they acquired Tango Gameworks, a Japanese studio, thanks to the acquisition of Bethesda and ZeniMax, and they added some important entries of the Final Fantasy series to Xbox Game Pass.
Hopefully, it seems more Final Fantasy games will be available through Game Pass in 2021. According to True Achievements, a Microsoft spokesman has told them that more entries from the Final Fantasy franchise will join the Game Pass service this year, with launch dates to be announced in the future.
In 2020, Microsoft brought Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, and Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition to the Xbox Game Pass library. Although at X019 the company has promised to bring even more Final Fantasy games, it seems now that some of them, including Final Fantasy X: HD Remastered, Final Fantasy XI, Final Fantasy XII Zodiac Age, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns and some other spin-offs of the series will join the service in 2021.
For Final Fantasy VII Remake, as far as we know, the exclusivity deal between Sony and Square Enix has not been one of those timed ones, so probably Xbox players wouldn’t be able to get their hands on that entry this year. Besides, the upcoming Final Fantasy XVI is also a PS5 exclusive, which again wouldn’t available on any other console when it launches.
Final Fantasy has always been one of the most popular Japanese franchises that has a huge community in western countries as well. Aside from Final Fantasy XVI, which is Square Enix’s biggest focus for the time being, a second part for Final Fantasy VII Remake has been promised to be developed in the future.
