Ever since Until Dawn originally released on PS4 back in 2015, it seems like fans have been asking for a sequel to the narrative-driven horror title. Despite the pleads though, developer Supermassive Games has opted not to create a direct sequel at the moment and is instead working on a similar game called Man of Medan, which is the first installment in an upcoming five-part anthology series called The Dark Pictures.
Now, in a new conversation with Game Informer, Supermassive has explained a bit more about why it opted to go down this route with The Dark Pictures rather than creating Until Dawn 2. Pete Samuels, the CEO and executive producer of Supermassive, says that the team has heard the cries for Until Dawn 2, but decided that working on an anthology series would allow the team to create more projects of Until Dawn’s kind in a shorter period of time. “A lot of [creating the anthology] is about our desire to serve that fanbase from our perspective and to serve us ourselves in what we love to do, which is do more stories and characters, and do it more frequently than one or two every few years,” Samuels said.
Man of Medan director Tom Heaton also said that with The Dark Pictures, it allows the team at Supermassive to explore different areas of horror rather than just those that are more associated with Until Dawn. “On an anthology, it’s a great opportunity to wrestle with a new subject, a new genre, and with characters that you can develop specifically for that story. You’re not tied to historical characters that you have to use,” he told Game Informer.
Producer Dan McDonald further added that it’s hard to create a follow-up to a title like Until Dawn when the outcome of the story is so dependent on the player’s choices. “If we were making sequels, we don’t know who survived. I mean we could probably work it out from your game save, but we don’t want to make a sequel to that. We want to make a different story with different people.”
While some are sure to be disappointed that a proper Until Dawn follow-up currently isn’t in the cards, Man of Medan seems more than capable of scratching that same itch. Hopefully, the game will do just that when it releases later this summer on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
