After years of castings, delays, and directors hopping on and off of Sony’s planned Uncharted movie, it seems as though the project is finally set to begin shooting in just about a month.

The news comes by way of Nathan Drake himself (no, not Nolan North), Tom Holland. Speaking to IGN at the premiere of Holland’s new Pixar-animated film Onward, he confirmed that the Uncharted movie is set to finally start shooting in mere weeks. “So yeah, we start shooting in like four weeks,” Holland stated. “Mark Wahlberg is going to be amazing as Sully. The stunt department that we have out there in Berlin have done an amazing job already, prepping the stunts, and it’s going to be an exciting one.”

Holland also talked in the interview about video games that he loves, specifically citing Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End as one of his favorites of all-time. “And lots of the inspiration from the film has come from that game in particular,” Holland noted. He then went on to talk about how excited he was when he learned he would be playing Nathan Drake in the upcoming film.

The most bizarre thing about the Uncharted movie beginning to film in about a month is that, as of now, no director has been publicly attached to the script. Following Travis Knight’s departure from the project in late December 2019, Sony hasn’t yet made clear who will now be helming the movie. Venom director Ruben Fleischer has been rumored to be the one that will end up sitting in the director’s chair, but this hasn’t been confirmed just yet.

With all of the turmoil that the Uncharted movie has seemingly gone through behind the scenes over the past couple of years, it’s hard to imagine that the final product will be an incredible one by any means. Still, Wahlberg and Holland are two great leading actors that could bring a lot of fun to the picture. Plus, the decision to focus on a younger iteration of Nathan Drake in the movie will help separate it a bit more from the source material, meaning that it might have a better chance of finding success. While I can’t say I’m personally all that enthused to see this movie, I’m also morbidly intrigued to see how it will turn out.

As of now, the Uncharted movie is set to hit theaters next year on March 5, 2021.
