Phoenixx Inc. and Mikosansaho announced their Touhou fangame, Touhou Mechanical Scrollery, will be launching on Steam on April 23. A brand new trailer was released as well, showing the game’s awesomeness.

Touhou Mechanical Scrollery features a mix between action RPG, danmaku, and 3D flight action. The playable characters in the game are Touhou‘s most iconic duo: the shrine maiden Reimu Hakurei and the witch Marisa Kirisame. Both characters can earn experience and level up. Melee attacks are available as well. The pair can also use their Spell Cards to unleash Bullet Hell patterns on the enemies.

Touhou Mechanical Scrollery’s Steam page can be accessed here. The game has a story told in form of visual novel like scenes as well. It’ll be available in Japanese, English, and Chinese.

Touhou Mechanical Scrollery features no voice acting.

I don’t know what you’re gonna do, but I’m definitely planning to grab this game and check if it’s as good as it looks. It’s obviously not the same kind of game at all, but in terms of pure coolness, it’s up there with Touhou Luna Nights. Speaking of which, its developer Team Ladybug is working on an official Lodoss game for the 30th anniversary of the franchise. There’s a very short but nice early access of the game on Steam.

Phoenixx Inc. previously released Gensou Skydrift, a Touhou 3D racing game.

If you’ve never heard about it, Touhou Project is a series of doujin games, as in Japanese indie games, made by Team Shangai Alice, a “group” solely composed of a dude called ZUN. The first Touhou game released in 1996, and the series became incredibly popular in early 2000s. Touhou games are technically danmaku / shmups, but the biggest and most popular aspects of Touhou lies in its characters and music, all composed by ZUN. Each new Touhou game can be considered a new album he’s releasing.

ZUN is pretty much the most popular doujin game developer in the world, and Touhou has been a huge influence on pop culture and gaming, especially on new, young developers. The perfect example is Toby Fox.

Touhou Project is one of the biggest icons of Japanese culture, and the franchise definitely had one of the biggest fandom in the world among Japanese franchises, after stuff like Dragon ball. However, it started to slightly decline in early 2010s, with the emergence of phenomenons such as Kancolle and later on FGO and Azur Lane. Thanks to ZUN’s full acceptance of any kind of derivative work and usage of his characters, with no licensing strings attached, the Touhou fandom has striven through billions of fanarts, trillions of music arrangements and remixes, doujin anime and manga. Multiple Touhou fangames developed by various studios regularly release each year. Touhou Mechanical Scrollery is one of them. Touhou is so rich beyond the original “official” danmaku games by ZUN, it’s far easier to find someone who knows Touhou through the fan content than through the original games.

The latest “Official” Touhou game by ZUN (personal blog) was Touhou 17 〜 Wily Beast and Weakest Creature. It released on Steam back in September 2019. You can read more about it here.
