Torchlight 3 has been playable in early access for a few months now, but Perfect World and Echtra Games’ latest is finally set to hit full release next month. The action RPG takes that classic Torchlight gameplay and tosses in some new mechanics. The biggest of which is the fully customizable forts that open up new possibilities.

I spent a decent chunk of time playing Torchlight 3 during its early access period. For the most part, it was a decent enough ARPG. However, everything felt a little cookie-cutter, which is strange for the third game in the series. Outside of the totally unique Railmaster, all of the classes play exactly like they would in any other ARPG. The foundation was solid, but everything else felt a little stale.
That said, it’s been a while since I’ve picked Torchlight 3 back up. They’ve released several patches since then to update the game. Hopefully, the team has filled the game out with fun content and maybe even beefed up the character’s ability trees. Either way, if you’re looking for a new Diablo-like, there aren’t many out this year. Torchlight 3 might not set the world on fire, but solid enough to give a look if you have a hankering for some procedurally-generated dungeon-diving.
Torchlight 3 launches for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on October 13. The game will also come to Nintendo Switch at a later date. No word yet on next-gen releases, but if this version does well enough, it’d be surprising to not see those pop up in the future.
