Frogwares Games shared another video going behind the scenes of The Sinking City, an open world investigation-horror game that is due out next year. This video focuses on the game’s use of visual storytelling.

In the video, cinematic artists Dmytro Teplinsky and Andrew Kudriashov discuss how much video games take direction from movie makers and other artists in order to create their own cinematics. They focus on the use of color, lighting, and camera angles to explore how each one impacts the player’s perception of the story being told.

One area that is discussed is the use of color. Kudriashov explains that the use of colors is used to highlight the level of sanity of the protagonist, Charles W. Reed, and he gives the example of the use of the color red in one scene as it is the color of blood and traditionally symbolizes violence in film. In addition, Teplinksy focuses on lighting and how it can set a mood and tell a story in itself, especially one as cryptic as the Lovecraftian horror-inspired The Sinking City.

You can check out the entire video below on the game’s techniques for visual storytelling below. The Sinking City will be released for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on March 21st, 2019
