While The Sims 4 got off to a rocky start, it has ultimately proved to be a success for EA. New expansions and DLC continue to release for the game, and EA revealed in their Q3 2019 financial results that The Sims 4 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One has finally surpassed 20 million unique players over five years after its initial PC launch.

Overall, last quarter actually went quite well for E3 thanks to ongoing titles like The Sims 4 and Apex Legends as well as new titles like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville. CEO Andrew Wilson spoke highly of EA’s releases and performance in Q3 2019, boasting that “amazing creative teams at Electronic Arts continue to deliver some of the most high-quality, innovative and engaging experiences and content to a growing global audience.”

Meanwhile, CFO Blake Jorgensen put more emphasis on ongoing service games. “Over the last twelve months, we have delivered record live services revenue, live services net bookings and operating cash flow. Our broad-based business model reduces our dependence on individual titles and enables us to deliver financial results for our shareholders by providing a constant stream of high-quality entertainment for our players,” he said. While its numbers are dwarfed by the likes of Apex Legends, as a premium game The Sims 4 has proven itself to be a worthwhile investment for EA.

The latest major expansion for The Sims 4 was Discover University, which added a ton of college-themed items and experiences to the game. The Sims 4 receives major content drops or expansions like that every few months, so we’ll likely hear about its next one soon. In the short term, a lot of new players are going to be introduced to the game next month thanks to PS Plus. The Sims 4 is currently available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
