Bloober Team officially revealed its next project during the latest episode of Inside Xbox. The Medium is a new psychological horror created by the developers of Layers of Fear, Observer, and Blair Witch. The game will be a next-gen Microsoft-exclusive, launching only on PC and Xbox Series X. While more information on the game is yet to arrive, the lead designer behind it has recently discussed the next-gen features of The Medium in a new interview.
Speaking to GameSpot, Wojciech Piejko explained the concept and the core idea behind The Medium, while revealing the reason why they will launch it as a next-gen-only title. According to Piejko, what lies behind the world of The Medium is watching the world from different points of view. The game’s main purpose is to give you a vantage point that’s beyond the ordinary reach. Everything in the game depends on your perspective and the information you have. So, don’t expect a simple story in which every character is either good or bad.
Bloober Team has crafted some first-ever ideas in the studio’s history in order to make the story-telling as impressive as ever. The Medium is going to be the first title from the studio with a third-person view and fixed camera angles. While fixed cameras might seem outdated, Piejko believes that it allows the team “to choose the most disturbing camera angles for the upcoming events,” and make it “a more cinematic experience,” compared to the studio’s previous titles.
The game has some undeniable inspirations from the Silent Hill series as the music composer behind the Japanese franchise is working on the score for The Medium. According to Piejko, Akira Yamaoka has highly impressed by the initial demo of The Medium and accepted Bloober Team’s invitation to work on its music.
Unfortunately, Piejko didn’t explain the core gameplay elements of the game, but he did reveal that the concept of The Medium first created in 2012 and since then, the team has been looking for an opportunity to bring it on, but the gameplay mechanics of it “couldn’t be fully realized on current-gen hardware,” so they had to develop it as a next-gen-only title.
The Medium is set to be released for PC and Xbox Series X in Holiday 2020. The game will be available on Xbox Game Pass at launch.
