With a little over three weeks left until launch, Sony and Naughty Dog today highlighted the gameplay of The Last of Us Part II in a new State of Play live stream.

The new showing for the game featured a fair mix of both new and old footage that had been shown again with added context. The Last of Us Part II director Neil Druckmann provided the voiceover for the majority of the stream and gave us more information about combat, gameplay systems and mechanics, and traversal.

One of the newer aspects of The Last of Us Part II that was shown today came in the way of one of the open environments that the game features. The location of Seattle in The Last of Us Part II features many branching paths and side objectives that players will be able to explore if they so choose. This seems to be quite similar to Naughty Dog’s approach to the open areas that were featured in Uncharted 4 and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.

Following the explanation from Druckmann regarding many of the new additions and features in the game, the showing concluded with an entirely new gameplay sequence. This demo portion of the stream showed us how combat will take place on a moment-to-moment basis and also verified that Ellie can now swim this time around.

By far the best portion of the demo came though when a PlayStation Vita console conspicuously made an appearance. One of the NPCs that Ellie comes across in the demo was found playing the handheld platform, which they then held up in fear. For those with keen ears, music could also be heard coming from the Vita, verifying that this NPC was actively playing Hotline Miami. Long live the Vita.

The Last of Us Part II will release in just a few short weeks on June 19, exclusively on PS4. If you’re looking to go all-in with your excitement for the game, a new special edition PS4 Pro console will be arriving alongside the game on launch day. And if you want to watch the full State of Play presentation, it can be found above.
