As one of the most anticipated games of the year (and possibly of the generation), The Last of Us Part II has had a lot riding behind it. Coming as the follow-up to one of last generation’s most acclaimed games and one of the PS4’s final first-party exclusives, the next chapter of Joel and Ellie’s story has been in the making for some time. The past few weeks especially have been a tumultuous time for fans with major story leaks that began to appear online, though it appears that Sony may have identified the individuals responsible for spreading the leaks online.

In a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, Sony has confirmed that the company has identified the individuals that were responsible for the leaks pertaining to The Last of Us Part II, which showed footage and several major story details from the plot of the game. According to GamesIndustry.biz, the individuals “were not affiliated with Sony Interactive Entertainment or Naughty Dog,” indicating that the leaks were from an outside source versus internal employees at the companies. Sony stated that the company declined to comment further, and that the information on the individuals is “currently subject to an ongoing investigation.”
The leaks themselves for The Last of Us Part II revealed rather significant elements of its plot, and have made it tricky to navigate social media in the past week or so. However, Sony and Naughty Dog have been vigilant in removing any videos or footage that made their way online through YouTube, Twitter, and other platforms. However, it goes without saying that at least for the next month and a half, be cautious around places such as Twitter, YouTube, and Reddit if you’re looking forward to the anticipated sequel.
Sony recently announced that The Last of Us Part II will finally be releasing on June 19, 2020, marking the third release window that the game has had since its reveal. Originally the game was set to launch in February 2020, but was shifted to May 2020 following the need for additional polish and development time by Naughty Dog. However, last month saw the release date shift once again due to the complications surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, leading to the game (hopefully) launching in just over a month from now.
The Last of Us Part II will release exclusively for PS4 on June 19, 2020.
