During his appearance on BBC Radio’s Must Watch special, Chernobyl showrunner Craig Mazin said his upcoming The Last of Us adaptation will enhance the original game.
“I think fans of something worry that, when the property gets licensed to someone else, those people don’t really understand it, or are going to change it,” said Mazin. “In this case, I’m doing it with the guy who did it, and so the changes that we’re making are designed to fill things out and expand, not to undo, but rather to enhance.”
Mazin reiterates that he’s working with Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann on the show. Additionally, the show is mapped out and they’re starting the screenwriting process. He also mentions both he and Druckmann are multitasking between creating new story ideas but also inserting parts of the 2013 game.
“We’re creating anew and we’re also reimagining what is already there to present a different format,” Mazin continued. “It’s kind of a dream come true for me. I’m a little bit scared because a lot of emotions connected to this game are rather intense. I think I’m probably going to go hide in a bunker for a while because you can’t make everyone happy.”

Back in March, HBO announced the Last of Us adaptation with Mazin as the showrunner and executive producer with Druckmann also executive producing and writing. Chernobyl director Johan Reneck has also said he’ll direct at least one episode of the series. Additionally, The Last of Us series composer Gustavo Santaolalla will compose music for the show. Currently, there’s no premiere date for the series and no casting updates.
While we wait for the HBO adaptation, The Last of Us Part II is available now, exclusively on PlayStation 4. You can watch the game’s launch trailer below. As more news drops about the HBO series, we’ll be sure to let you know.
