The Game Awards 2019 is set to take place in just a few mere weeks and today, the nominees for this year’s show were finally divulged.
In a year where many thought there wasn’t one major standout release that stood above the rest, the nominees for Game of the Year in 2019 proved to be very intriguing. Here are the six titles that are up for The Game Awards’ most prestigious honor this year:
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
- Control
- The Outer Worlds
- Death Stranding
- Resident Evil 2
- Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
In case you’re unaware of how Super Smash Bros. Ultimate can be nominated for Game of the Year despite releasing in 2018, it missed the cutoff date for last year’s show and was, therefore, able to be considered in 2019.
As you can guess, these nominees for Game of the Year also ended up receiving nominations in a variety of other categories, too. Death Stranding saw two nominations in the Best Performance category with both Mads Mikkelsen and Norman Reedus being up for the award. Control, Sekiro, Death Stranding, and Resident Evil 2 were also each nominated for Best Action/Adventure and Best Game Direction awards as well.
All in all, there doesn’t seem to be a shoo-in to win Game of the Year this year. If I had to guess, I think Smash will end up taking home the hardware, purely because it’s the one game that I think many voters can get behind. The other nominees on this list are either a bit divisive or niche. It’ll be fun to see which game comes out on top when all is said and done.
If you’d like to see all of the other nominees at The Game Awards this year, you can watch the video below or head over to the event’s official website. The Game Awards 2019 are set to take place next month on Thursday, December 12.
