Yesterday the internet went up in flames of conflicting emotions as the newest character addition to be heading to Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighter Pass 2 is Mojang’s Steve from Minecraft. A former Mojang employee seems to have revealed that talks for this crossover have been in the works for a long time.
Minecraft’s former production director, Daniel Kaplan shared the news from the official Minecraft account and then retweeted that by asking users when they believed discussions about the collaboration started. He tagged Senior Analyst Daniel Ahmad, who replied with 2014.

Elsewhere on Twitter, Liam Edwards, Game Director & Designer at Q-Games had stated that he’d heard of Steve being in Smash around 3 years ago. One user was skeptical about that, so KindaFunnyGames co-host Grimran Khan shared Kaplan’s above tweet. Kaplan jumped in to confirm that talks had started at least 5 years ago. He doesn’t know when Nintendo started to implement the talks into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate though.
That’s when talks started at least. No idea when implementation started 🙂

He also jokingly tweeted a screenshot of Masahiro Sakurai from the video saying, “Even I didn’t think this day would come.” So it seems as if things were always somewhat unclear on whether Steve in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate would ever actually happen.
Steve’s addition to the game resulted in not only a comedic announcement trailer, but also a mural featuring all characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but Steve looks incredibly out of place. Apparently, we can expect to see more information about Steve being revealed on October 3 in a more in-depth presentation video. This will no doubt introduce the various skins, such as Alex, Enderman, and the Zombie.
We can also expect to learn about specific attacks and skills. Going by the trailer, it looks like players will be able to build blocks on the fly, and craft weapons to help in combat, and that does mean that Steve can wield the iconic Minecraft sword.
