Capcom will release Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection later this month, which celebrates the long-running fighting game series by combining all versions of Street Fighter, Street Fighter II, Street Fighter III, and the Street Fighter Alpha series into one package. Today, a retrospective video was released that focuses on the mechanics and impact of both the original Street Fighter and all the versions of Street Fighter II.
The video goes chronologically, starting with Street Fighter, which hit Japanese arcades all the way back in 1987. While many aspects of gameplay and visuals were extremely rough here, this game did lay the groundwork for the series to flourish in the future, and introduced characters like Ryu, Ken, and Sagat.
Thing really took off when the original Street Fighter II hit arcades, as it introduced never-before-seen mechanics like multiple playable characters and stringing together combos. Over the next few years, gameplay would be refined and characters would be introduced in Street Fighter II: Champion Edition, Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting, Super Street Fighter II, and Super Street Fighter II: Turbo, cementing the game’s legacy in the fighting game scene.
