For the past several years, EA has had control of creating official games set in the Star Wars universe, to mixed results. The publisher experienced some severe backlash with its multiplayer-focused Battlefront titles, while rebounding with a single-player, story-focused campaign in the form of Respawn’s Jedi: Fallen Order. Now, for the publisher’s next Star Wars experience, developer EA Motive is bringing the exciting space combat of the series to a single and multiplayer title later this year, called Star Wars: Squadrons.

Ahead of its upcoming EA Play presentation later this week, EA has officially pulled back the curtain on one of its new titles, which is called Star Wars: Squadrons. Compared to recent Star Wars titles that have been released by EA such as the Battlefront series and Jedi: Fallen OrderSquadrons is primarily focused around space combat featuring the numerous iconic ships of the Star Wars universe.

The official reveal trailer that debuted today gave us a closer look at the upcoming title, while also confirming that the game will release for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 2, 2020. According to the trailer, Squadrons will feature both a single-player campaign and multiplayer modes, with the story set after the events of Return of the Jedi. The game will also feature support on PS4 and PC to play through the entire campaign in VR, and cross-play support will also be enabled for multiplayer between the console and PC versions of the game. Pre-order pages for the game on Steam and other retailers have also revealed that the game will cost $39.99.

Squadrons has been rumored or known about for some time now, as the title was originally leaked on the PlayStation Store under the codename “Project Maverick.” Then, last week on the Microsoft Store the official name of the project and its key art were leaked, giving us a clearer picture of what the new title will entail.

As someone that loved the Rogue Squadron games back in the day, personally I’m stoked to see a modern-day take on what ship-based Star Wars combat will look like. From what we’ve seen so far, Squadrons seems like what we’ve been waiting for, and I can’t wait to hop into an X-Wing (or my personal favorite, the Y-Wing) to recreate the epic space battles that I’ve loved from the series. While we didn’t end up seeing any gameplay from the reveal trailer, presumably we’ll get to learn more about the game later this week when EA Play 2020 airs.

Star Wars: Squadrons will release for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 2, 2020.
