Square Enix has finally announced that we’re getting a high-definition remake of Star Ocean: First Departure R, coming to the PS4 and Nintendo Switch. Star Ocean: First Departure R, is an action RPG developed by tri-Ace and published by Square Enix that released on the Super Famicom in Japan on July 19, 1996. The game was then ported on the PSP in Japan on December 27, 2007, and eventually came to the West on October 21, 2008.
The story of Star Ocean: First Departure R centers around three friends, who are in search of a cure for a disease when they come in contact with a space federation who’s locked in a war with another galactic power. I personally missed out on this particular Star Ocean game, but I’m excited to finally experience why people love it.
So far the only thing we’ve learned from with this announcement is the new artwork of the three protagonists, Roddick Farrence, Millie Chliette, and Dorne Murtough. There are also new features and extra content being added that weren’t in the original game when it was released.
With past Star Ocean titles not receiving a warm welcome, I’m pointing the finger at you Star Ocean: The Last Hope and Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness, fans of the series have been looking forward to Square Enix announcing a new game. Even though this is just a remake, I think we can all agree this is better than expected.
This announcement did have fans wondering if we’ll ever see a remake of Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. But, for now, we’ll take what Square Enix has given us and be excited about this Star Ocean game with the hope of more Star Ocean remakes in the future.
