A recent trademark filing in Europe has come to light from our friends at Square Enix. It seems they’ve filed for a trademark on the name Outriders with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).
From the documentation filed on the EUIPO website, we know that Outriders falls under Nice Classifications 9 and 41. Nice Class 9 essentially covers properties ranging from video games to mobile media and films while Nice Class 41 covers entertainment services, including video games, online game services, television, film, and many other entertainment fields. While trademark filings are never certain, this may hint at a new video game property in development:
On top of that, a separate trademark application was filed for Nice Classifications 16, 25, 28: gaming guides, clothes, and toys/peripherals, respectively:
We don’t really know much else about what the name Outrider could eventually transform into, but we do know that Square Enix and People Can Fly announced a partnership to develop a AAA shooter title and that Square Enix has promised multiple blockbuster and medium games in the near future. Could Outriders be the title of a new game in partnership with People Can Fly, or is it related to Square Enix’s promise to push new IPs and titles in addition to blockbuster names like Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy? Only time will tell, but for now, we have only speculation as to what Outriders could be.
