At this weekend’s BitSummit 7 Spirits event, publisher DANGEN Entertainment put out a new trailer for their upcoming game Smelter. The game from developer X Plus mixes real-time strategy and action platforming to make a genre mashup that looks bonkers in action. Check out the trailer below.
You play as Eve in this genre hybrid. She teams up with the mysterious armor Smelter in her quest to find Adam. As you crusade throughout the Rumbly Lands, you’ll unlock new upgrades for Smelter, giving Eve new skills to help her fight through the world.
At first glance, the game looks like your typical action-platformer inspired by the 16-bit era. These types of games have become increasingly popular over the current console generation, so you’d be forgiven if you wrote off Smelter after watching the first minute of the trailer.
Fortunately, right around the 1:00 mark, the trailer just goes completely off the deep end. There isn’t much detail as to what you’ll actually do in the real-time strategy portion of the game, but I can tell you that the amount of meters and text on the screen already has me completely overwhelmed (in the best way).
I love seeing devs try new things. I’m not even sure if this combination will even work, but I am ecstatic that it’s going to exist. Smelter looks a bit like the SNES classic ActRaiser and I am so here for it.
Smelter is coming to Nintendo Switch, PC, and PS4 at some point in 2020. Keep it locked here for more news and info on this and other indie releases.
