According to a new report from French news outlet Actugaming.net, 2020 might finally be the year that Diablo 2 gets its much-anticipated remaster. Of course, all of this is speculation, with the outlet citing “sources close to the studio”. However, Actugaming did correctly predict many of Blizzard’s big announcements at Blizzcon 2019. And, a Diablo 2 remaster rumor has been circulating for years now. Blizzard already has World of Warcraft: Shadowlands releasing soon and most of their other big games already announced. Thus, a Diablo 2 remaster feels like an easy way for Blizzard to drum up hype if they do put on some type of Blizzcon-like event this year.
Actugaming reports that the potential game is titled Diablo 2 Resurrected. Vicarious Visions is supposedly helping Blizzard out with the port. Considering their work on the Crash Bandicoot trilogy and the Destiny 2 port, that makes a lot of sense. The game will potentially release during 2020’s fourth quarter. Though, that could easily change given the current global situation.
Of course, the big question is will the game meet with fan expectations. Earlier this year, Activision-Blizzard saw massive backlash around their middling remaster of Warcraft 3. Fans are likely to be even more rabid around Diablo 2. This a game the studio has to get right. However, given how poor Warcraft 3‘s remaster was, I’ll be coming to any potential D2 remaster with a heavy degree of skepticism.
If Diablo 2 Resurrected is, indeed, a thing, expect an announcement either during the summer or at whatever Blizzcon 2020 becomes. Usually, I would assume Blizzard would hold out for their own event. However, with that in doubt, they might choose to reveal it earlier than originally planned.
