Well, the moment we’ve all been waiting for has finally happened: Sony has officially filed the trademark for the term “PS5”. Wait, that wasn’t the big PS5-related announcement you’ve been holding out for?
While it’s not a formal announcement regarding when Sony will opt to reveal the PS5 to the public, the company did seemingly take one step closer to that moment today by filing the PS5 trademark. This isn’t a shocking development by any means and was something that was bound to happen sooner rather than later with the PS5 releasing later this year.
The filing, found via Let’s Go Digital, was applied for yesterday on January 27, 2020. The application was filed with the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property and doesn’t expire all the way until 2030. I imagine Sony will be looking to re-up on this trademark a decade from now, too.
Of course, this begs the question of whether or not this trademark filing indicates that Sony is about to reveal a whole lot more about the PS5. Based on the company’s past with the PS4, well, it could be possible. As some have pointed out, when the trademark for “PS4” was filed, Sony then held its reveal event for the platform merely a day later. While this definitely isn’t happening with the PS5, it may point to the fact that Sony is about to finally lift the veil on what it has in store for the upcoming console sooner than we might think.
We’re definitely keeping our ears to the ground in case Sony decides to announce something big regarding the PS5. We’ll keep you posted if anything major transpires in the coming days with Sony’s next console.
