Coming off of last year’s NieR: Automata and the studio’s previous titles like Bayonetta and Vanquish, developer PlatinumGames is always unpredictable when it comes to new projects, and now its upcoming World of Demons is not only heading to mobile, but also coming fairly soon.
PlatinumGames has announced that its next title will be World of Demons, which is a character action-adventure game “set in a fantastical, ancient Japan that pits fearless Samurai warriors against mystical Yokai monsters.” The title itself will feature “controls engineered from the ground up for touch devices,” and the developer stated that the game “marks an evolution in the mobile gaming experience.”
According to a press release, the title has been in development for over three years and will provide a “compelling, original setting.” Likewise, additional gameplay details explained that World of Demons will feature “full 360-degree freedom of movement, quick and responsive dodging and parrying, sword-based combo attacks, unique movement, and combat techniques with exciting finishing moves.”
Additionally, it appears that players will mainly take on the role of “powerful Samurai,” while also having the ability to call in Yokai Minions to assist players in combat and to take down enemies through abilities such as elemental buffs, attacks, spells, and more. The visuals will take inspiration from Japanese ink paintings and woodblock prints, according to the game’s announcement.
The game itself is being developed in conjunction with publisher DeNA and will be released for mobile this year, marking one of PlatinumGames’ first forays into mobile games. The title will release for iOS this summer, and will release for Android later this year.
Beyond release, PlatinumGames said it will plan to support World of Demons with “continuous content and balancing updates on a monthly basis,” which will include new story chapters, enemies, new playable characters, and a variety of in-game events and content for players to collect new rewards. Additionally, the game is being developed on the principle that all of its in-game features “must serve the action,” and will provide upgrades that only serve to have a “holistic relationship with the core action gameplay so that players that have invested effort in upgrades will have increased strategic and tactical options during the action.”
World of Demons will be a free-to-play experience for mobile users with in-app purchases, though given the tone of PlatinumGames’ statements, it appears that the developer is trying to find ways to avoid making the game “pay-to-win” through whatever microtransaction systems that the game will ultimately include on release.
World of Demons will debut on iOS this summer, followed by its release on Android later this year. For more on the game, you can check out the announcement trailer below, along with the first batch of screenshots and artwork.
