The past few years have seen PlatinumGames grow exponentially, coming off several acclaimed and commercially-successful titles like NieR: Automata and Astral Chain, along with a recent investment from Tencent for future development. Specifically, the company has its eyes on increasing its self-publishing efforts, with the “Platinum 4” initiative highlighting some of the biggest plans that the studio has for its future growth. While we’ve seen three of these announcements so far, there is still one left that the company has in store, and hopefully we won’t have to wait too much longer to hear about it.
Speaking in an interview at PAX East, PlatinumGames’ Hideki Kamiya and Atsushi Inaba shared some insight into the recent announcements and plans for the company’s future, including upcoming new projects and an additional studio. These announcements have all been part of the “Platinum 4” website that has teased PlatinumGames’ new developments, leaving one more announcement to complete the cycle.
When asked about the final reveal for Platinum 4, Inaba said that while the studio couldn’t confirm an exact timeframe for when the announcement will happen, he stated that it’s “not too far away.” Kamiya also added that the final announcement would be “a doozy” and that fans should “be ready for when you hear it,” whether that ends up being a new game announcement or something else entirely.
The first announcements from the Platinum 4 website so far have resulted in the Kickstarter campaign for The Wonderful 101 Remastered, the upcoming Project G.G., and the first details of PlatinumGames’ new office in Tokyo, Japan that will work on a number of studio projects, including new live service-style games.
Alongside the announcements from Platinum 4, the studio is also currently working on several projects with other publishers, such as the Nintendo Switch-exclusive Bayonetta 3 and Babylon’s Fall with Square Enix, which will be released on PS4 and PC. Currently, neither project has an established release window or date.
