PlatinumGames published on their official site an interview with the staff working on the in-house engine the studio has been developing, the tentatively titled Platinum Engine. The interview reveals what kind of objectives and necessities pushed forward the creation of this engine. We summarized everything below.

In the interview, we learned how the development of the Platinum Engine started around 2 years ago, with a team of 6 to 7 developers working on it for now. Platinum Engine has a slightly different approach than a typical in-house engine and focuses on development ease and expressivity. Compared to Unreal Engine and Unity, which can lack certain features, the Platinum Engine will allow the company to make highly original games. The Platinum Engine will most notably facilitate developing action games characters and their movements, with better, faster and direct testing options, meaning better communication between the various types of developers artists, programmers, etc, working on the same project.

PlatinumGames also aims with Platinum Engine to be able to create games with various art styles, not limited to anime cell-shading or photorealism. Lastly, the company wishes to challenge itself and go beyond its usual action games, now that it’s also planning to self-publish games, and the Platinum Engine is one of the necessary steps for all that to happen.

PlatinumGames announced a few weeks ago that four big announcements, the Platinum 4, were coming. Three of these already happened: The Wonderful 101 Remaster Kickstarter. The reveal of Project G.G., a new game directed by Hideki Kamiya and in the line of Viewtiful Joe and The Wonderful 101. The launch of a new PlatinumGames studio in Tokyo.

The fourth and last announcement wasn’t shared yet. PlatinumGames’ Hideki Kamiya and Atsushi Inaba teased that it’s coming soon and it’ll be something awesome.

PlatinumGames is also currently developing Bayonetta 3 and Babylon’s Fall.
