After originally launching in Japan nearly 8 years ago, Sega’s long-awaited MMO Phantasy Star Online 2 has finally come to the west today.

Following multiple beta phasesPhantasy Star Online 2 has officially released for free today on Xbox One, finally bringing about the end of this journey for those in the west who have patiently awaited the title’s arrival. While PSO2 is available now on Xbox One, Sega also announced today that it will be coming to PC as well via the Microsoft Store in late May. A specific release date for this version of the game hasn’t been given yet, but it will likely be unveiled in the coming weeks.

News on Phantasy Star Online 2 coming to the west had fallen completely silent until last year at Microsoft’s E3 2019 press event where it was re-announced to be heading to the westward regions initially on Xbox One. This information was a shock to many and proved to be one of the biggest reveals at Microsoft’s conference purely due to how out of left field it was.

While today marks the beginning of Phantasy Star Online 2’s journey for those in the west, Sega has said that this will simply be the beginning of what it has planned “Phantasy Star Online 2 changed the history of Online Action RPG’s; the sci-fi story, characters, and gameplay has resonated with gamers worldwide and now we’re excited to bring North American players this special game — for free,” said PSO2’s North American Head of Marketing, Fred White. “Our player community is the heart and soul of the game and we couldn’t have done it without their ongoing support and passion. Now that it is officially launched on Xbox One, we look forward to kicking off a fun-filled future of events, collaborations and expansions in the years to come!”

To coincide with launch, PSO2 will be having a litany of rewards and bonuses that will be given out to players over the coming weeks. Special Urgent Quests will also be available this week, too. For more information on the game’s rollout, you can find additional details on the PSO2 website.

It has taken a long time to get to this point so if you’re someone who is eagerly jumping into Phantasy Star Online 2 today, I hope you have a ton of fun.
