According to an apparent listing found on the Microsoft store, Konami could be forgoing the full release of PES 2021 for this year in favor of a “Season Update” to last year’s eFootball PES game. The listing states that the update will be available for a “Special Anniversary Price” and will be “an updated edition of eFootball PES 2020 (launched in September 2019) containing the latest player data and club rosters.”
The impact of COVID-19 has played havoc on sporting events around the world, and football/soccer is no different with seasons being both delayed and postponed. This is likely to have a big effect on this year’s big football titles like FIFA and PES as transfer window dates will change, meaning players will potentially still be changing clubs after the games have been released.
This is something Konami has seemingly acknowledged with this update, stating:
“Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19, certain real-world football leagues and/or tournaments may undergo sudden regulation changes. As a result, there is a chance that in-game regulations may not perfectly match their real life counterparts. Other changes that impact leagues and tournaments may also be implemented in future updates without prior notice.”

This has been a change that many FIFA and PES fans have been wanting for a while now, and it looks like Konami are going to be the first to change. It’s probably wise due to the fact that they now consistently play second fiddle to EA’s FIFA franchise and given the loss of two major licenses for this year’s upcoming game, in whatever format that looks like.
Don’t forget; in lieu of an actual European Championship Tournament this year, PES has plenty of Euro 2020 content currently playable in game on PS4, Xbox One and PC. Keep your eyes peeled here for any official statement from Konami regarding PES 2021.
