If you were less-than-thrilled with 2016’s Paper Mario: Color Splash, then the team at Moonsprout Games might have good news for you. Their upcoming game Bug Fables looks to emulate everything you know and love of the older entries in the Paper Mario series. Check out the team’s latest trailer below to get a great feel for what Bug Fables will be.
Everything here looks straight out of 2001. The visuals and animation are near-perfect recreations of what made Paper Mario stand out when it released on the N64. The irreverent dialogue and charming humor are equally on point. If you were looking for a spiritual sequel to The Thousand-Year Door, this looks like it might be it.
Bug Fables isn’t just a rehashing of the Paper Mario formula. The team is also adding a few modern sensibilities to their game. When you’re in combat, you can use action commands to make your attacks and defenses more effective. And the game also features a crafting-like cooking system. This lets you take resources and turn them into items that further your battle prowess.
That said, Bug Fables wears its inspiration firmly on its sleeve. This is an adventure RPG through and through. Fortunately, if you’re on the fence, the team has put out a short demo that you can download and try out on the PC. Give it a look if you’d like to get a deeper idea of what’s in store for you.
Bug Fables is coming to Nintendo Switch, PC, and PS4 this September.
