2020 is stacking up to be the best year for Oddworld ever. In addition to the fact that Oddworld: Soulstorm may release this year, publisher Microids and developer Oddworld Inhabitants just announced a three-game publishing deal that will bring several Oddworld games to the Nintendo Switch over the course of 2020. This all starts with the previously announced Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD that is coming to Nintendo Switch later this month.
Today’s announcement also confirms that the Stranger’s Wrath port for Nintendo’s hybrid console will launch on January 23 and that it will be getting a physical release with some unspecified extra bonuses in Q1 2020. While the second and third games weren’t revealed in the announcement, Microids stressed that the three games it is bringing over are “classic Oddworld titles,” so whether or not Soulstorm will come to Nintendo Switch is still up in the air. Personally, I hope we get a port of Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty, though there is a chance we just get the original, and an HD remaster of Munch’s Oddysee.
Both Oddworld Inhabitants and Microids had positive things to say about this partnership and the Switch ports it will produce. Oddworld Inhabitants Co-Founder Sherry McKenna stated “Microids champions the Oddworld brand and our goal to create entertainment properties that balance beauty, empathy, creativity, innovation, and craftsmanship. They understand the classic games and indie space. This partnership is a great fit for us, and we are excited to have them on board as we bring three classic Oddworld games to the Nintendo Switch in 2020.”
Meanwhile, Microids CEO Stephane Longeard also chimed in on the matter. “We are very happy about this new collaboration with Oddworld Inhabitants regarding the publishing of these three classic titles! We are going to help as much as we can to ensure these masterpieces get the spotlight they deserve. These three games will fit quite nicely in our catalog where retro gaming has a prominent place,” they said. “These games captivated an entire generation of gamers and some Microids employees, formerly working with the GT Interactive team, got to work on the original launch of the first Oddworld games more than 20 years ago.
