Early this July 27, the Japanese Nintendo Customer Support Twitter account shared a peculiar thread, warning Switch players against overheating consoles.
Summer is incredibly hot and humid in Japan. I’m sure I’m not teaching you anything if you’ve seen certain footage of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The intense heat means your PC and consoles are at a higher risk of overheating. And Nintendo actually shared some comments on Switch consoles overheating. We translated them below.

Nintendo Customer Support Japan’s tips against overheating Switch consoles
Here are the series of instructions tweeted out by @Nintendo_cs:
Tweet 1: “If you use your Nintendo Switch in a hot environment, the console’s temperature might rise. You should ideally play between temperatures of 5 to 35°C (41 to 95 °F). Moreover, if the air intake and exhaust ports are blocked, the console’s temperature might rise. Please be careful not to obstruct them.”
Tweet 2: “If your Nintendo Switch overheats, it might automatically enter sleep mode as a protection measure. If you play on TV mode, please set the dock in a way so the heat doesn’t easily accumulate.”
Tweet 3: “If foreign objects such as dust enter the air intake or exhaust ports, remove them with a vacuum cleaner. For safety concerns, do not try to disassemble the console.”

Switch games and overheat
Switch consoles can get really noisy when playing demanding games in handheld mode. You can hear the cooling fans really hard when playing Zelda Breath of the Wild for example. It’ll be interesting to see how the console will fare as more and more demanding games get released. Such as Genshin Impact.
Looking at the specs officially revealed for the Switch OLED, it doesn’t seem like this new model does anything more in terms of preventing overheating. We’ll know for sure once it releases on October 8, 2021.
Nintendo is also working on the sequel to Breath of the Wild, which is sure to make some Switch consoles overheat in the middle of summer. For now, the game is planned for a 2022 release.
