It’s no surprise that since its launch in 2017, the Nintendo Switch has been remarkably successful. Nintendo’s latest financial reports today show that the Switch has sold just under 80 million units, putting it on track to rival the company’s bestselling systems including the Wii and DS. However, it remains to be seen if we can expect a new Switch model in the future, according to Nintendo’s latest comments.

A report from Bloomberg detailed Nintendo’s latest financial earnings call, and specifically gave some insight into the prospects of an updated Switch. In response to a question, company president Shuntaro Furukawa noted that Nintendo “doesn’t plan to announce a new Switch model anytime soon.”

While this is more of a non-answer than anything, Furukawa also leaves room to interpret that Nintendo may plan to bring a new Switch to market down the line. Past rumors have suggested that Nintendo is at work on a “Switch Pro”, presumably an upgraded, more powerful version of the original Switch. Given Nintendo’s history with updating systems like the 3DS and DS, it’s not surprising that an updated Switch is probably on its way.

With the system hitting its fourth anniversary this year, the time is likely right for Nintendo to release a more capable Switch that could compete with the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. At the moment details on the system are vague, but one of the key talking points has been potential support for playing games in 4K.
