Following the recent reports of Nintendo accounts getting hacked, the company announced in a statement today that they will no longer be allowing consumers to sign into their counts through their Nintendo Network ID.
“As one action in our ongoing investigation, we are discontinuing the ability to use a Nintendo Network ID to sign in to a Nintendo Account. All other options to sign in to a Nintendo Account remain available,” said the company in today’s statement. They were also adamant in wanting to “reassure users that there is currently no evidence pointing toward a breach of Nintendo’s databases, servers or services.” To be able to sign in now users must use their e-mail and password or through a linked connection in their account including Facebook, Twitter, Google, or Apple.
Earlier this week flocks went to Twitter explaining that someone breached their accounts gaining access to their PayPal accounts. Nintendo will be contacting those who they believed might have been affected. The company said, “As a further precaution, we will soon contact users about resetting passwords for Nintendo Network IDs and Nintendo Accounts that we have reason to believe were accessed without authorization.”
To stop any more accounts being potentially breached, it is encouraged for everyone to use two-factor verification. With still being an ongoing investigation the company has refrained from going into detail regarding how the hackers were able to access unauthorized accounts. They also did not state whether or not we can expect future updates on the situation.
We will continue to update Nintendo’s investigation when continue to bring up any new information. You can read Nintendo’s full statement over on their official site.
