After revealing that Damian Lillard would be appearing on the current generation version of NBA 2K21 yesterday, 2K Games today unveiled the cover athlete for next-gen iterations of the game and the result isn’t much of a surprise.
Much as myself and many others expected, New Orleans Pelicans phenom Zion Williamson will be the superstar appearing on NBA 2K21 for the forthcoming PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game. Williamson, who is a rookie in the NBA this season, was drafted by the Pelicans out of Duke in 2019 and was last year’s National College Player of the Year. Essentially, Williamson is considered the “next big thing” in the realm of basketball and might very well be the most hyped-up player since LeBron James was drafted out of high school almost twenty years ago.
“Being on the cover of NBA 2K has been a dream since I was a kid and to be the first NBA 2K21 cover athlete for the next-generation of gaming is really special,” said Williamson said via a press release. “Since the day I joined Team 2K, I’ve wanted to make an impact on basketball culture both on and off the court, and being the cover athlete for NBA 2K21 on next-gen consoles lets me do that. I can’t wait to be part of this global phenomenon and hoop with all the ballers out there on NBA 2K21.”
Despite already being one of the most popular players in the NBA, however, Williamson’s selection to appear on the cover of NBA 2K21 is pretty wild considering he’s hardly even played in the league. To date, Williamson has only played 19 career games, primarily due to the fact that an injury kept him out of the early portion of the 2019-2020 season. By the time he returned, he was only able to compete in 19 games before the season was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Stay tuned tomorrow as we’ll be learning who the third and final cover athlete for NBA 2K21 is, along with the game’s release date. Along with arriving on next-gen consoles, NBA 2K21 will also be landing on Xbox One, PS4, Stadia, and Switch.
