The NBA season may be suspended due to the coronavirus; however, that doesn’t mean the sport has to stop completely. This Friday, NBA players face off in NBA 2K20 as the first round of the NBA 2K Players Tournament kicks off. The tournament features 16 different NBA stars and is set to air on ESPN. This NBA 2K20 features a great selection of NBA stars. There are some big names here like Trae Young, Zach LaVine, and DeMarcus Cousins. And, of course, this might be the only chance we get to see Kevin Durant “in action” this season after the superstar injured his Achilles tendon during the Finals last year. Plus, KD and Donovan Mitchell were two of the players who tested positive for COVID-19 so far. Seeing them participate in something like this for charity is pretty cool.
These real player tournaments have become pretty popular during the global pandemic. Both the English Football League and La Liga hosted tournaments in FIFA 20. Technically, the EFL tourney allowed any employee to participate and some of them have eSports players on staff. So, it wasn’t a true player tourney, but many did participate. EA even gave Marco Asensio of Real Madrid a special Player Moments card from when he won the La Liga tournament. The practice has also been popular in places like NASCAR and Formula 1.
The NBA 2K Players Tournament will award the champion $100,000 to donate to a charity of their choice. They selected player seeding based their ranking in 2K, making for some interesting matchups. If you want to watch the tournament, be sure to keep your eyes locked on ESPN for the kick-off games on April 3 at 7:00 PM ET.
