Mortal Kombat, originally developed by Midway Games all the way back in 1992, saw its first movies away from the game franchise in 1995 and then again with Mortal Kombat: Annihilation in 1997. Moving into more recent times, we saw a new red band trailer appear over on Twitter that included all the blood and guts you’d expect and fan-favorite characters.
Producer of the Mortal Kombat movie, Todd Garner who also was the executive producer on Anger Management and 13 Going on 30, talks about how he wanted to ensure the reboot was fresh and easier for newcomers to the franchise but, of course, there will be aspects of the game included for long-running fans.
“If you play the game and you expect us to be caught up with the game, it’s impossible. Because even if you tried today to catch up to the game, Mortal Kombat XII is going to be somewhere else,” replied Garner. “So we made a conscious decision on… I’ve been on this movie for five years, they’ve been developing it for nine. And so we made a conscious decision, just to try to make a classic movie that can set up the world for everybody.”
Even though there will be some obvious changes to the movie, Garner touches on the nationality of Mortal Kombat‘s cast “Everybody’s nationality is correct. If they were a Chinese character in the game, they’re a Chinese actor,” said Garner. This is a positive step as this wasn’t the case in Mortal Kombat 1995. It certainly will be interesting to see what will be included and what won’t when we start to get more information about the movie but as of right now, those new to Mortal Kombat should still have an enjoyable watch according to Garner but don’t expect anything too heavily influenced from the games.
The Mortal Kombat movie is set for release on April 16 and will be coming to movie theatres, as well as streaming exclusively on HBO Max.
