Oddworld creator Lorne Lanning appeared on Geoff Keighley’s E3 Youtube show this afternoon to chat about his team’s upcoming Oddworld: Soulstorm. Lanning and Keighley dove into the background of the game and the character of Abe while showing off a bit of gameplay. Check out the full interview below.
Development started three years ago on the sixth entry into the Oddworld franchise. Lanning mentioned in the interview that the character of Abe started as a slave trying to free himself and his people from oppressors, but that original idea had sort of changed over the course of the series. He feels the more recent games had “gone off track” and is hoping to bring the series back to its roots with Oddworld: Soulstorm.
The footage shown was minimal but looks beautiful. Lanning talked about how you’ll need to combine items to create makeshift weapons out of the junk “The Man” is allowing you to purchase. He calls the game “anarchistic in that way”. You’ll also need to recruit a number of characters to build up your team. Lanning and his team want players to care about these characters and their plight. Hopefully, we get another trailer dropped later this week.
At the end of the interview, Lanning says the team is shooting for a 2020 release. However, this a “big game made by a small team”, so I would expect that date could easily move back depending on how development goes. Keep your eyes on Dualshockers for tons more info coming out of E3 this week.
