Mutazione, an ambitious new title for the PS4 from studio Die Gute Fabrik, has been revealed by writer and narrative designer Hannah Nicklin. And it comes alongside a short announcement trailer to give us an idea of what it has in store.
The synopsis, according to the Playstation blog post, is that over 100 years ago a great meteor named “Moon Dragon” struck a tropical holiday resort. Most of the inhabitants perished but those who didn’t remained in the mutating environment and founded the small community of Mutazione.
In the modern day of Mutazione‘s setting, you play as protagonist Kai as she travels to this strange and secretive community to visit her ailing Grandfather, Nonno. Run around the village, choose who you want to talk to, and explore your way through an in-game week of small-town drama and scenic hangout spots.
As the protagonist nurses her grandfather back to health, you can make new friends, discover old betrayals, unravel long-kept secrets, and try to save everyone from a mysterious darkness at the heart of it all. There’s also a mysterious generative musical “gardening” mechanic the game revolves around, which will be revealed in a future update.
The style of the game is incredibly unique and I adore how charming the characters and setting are, despite the rather bleak backstory and setting. Also I happen to be a huge fan of visual novel titles and strange, nearly absurdest-styled humor and storytelling. Which makes sense considering the inspiration taken from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Twin Peaks, Grey’s Anatomy, and Bojack Horseman, as stated by Nicklin herself.
For those interested and able, an exclusive demo of Mutazione will be available to play at Day of the Devs at Game Developers Conference (GDC) March 18th – 22nd or at the Sony booth at PAX East, March 28th – 31st. And for the many who probably can’t attend either event, there are sure to be plenty of gameplay footage videos — both official and from amateur players — that will surface online for us to enjoy. You can also follow the developers’ official Twitter account for new updates as it approaches its final months of development.
