Gearbox Software has been at the center of quite a few legal disputes over the last decade, whether it be from falsely advertising Aliens: Colonial Marines or fighting for control of the Duke Nukem IP from 3D Realms. That being said, a brand new lawsuit that was recently ousted by Kotaku and it involves Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford being sued for taking a supposed $12 million secret bonus.
This lawsuit was apparently filed by Wade Callender, who was a lawyer for Gearbox from 2010 until 2018. Gearbox actually sued Wade back in November as they claimed he had never paid back money he borrowed from Gearbox for things such as tuition and home loans and abused his company credit card. This ultimately led Wade to counter-sue Gearbox, with his case containing some chilling accusations towards Randy Pitchford.
Callender is claiming that Randy Pitchford received the secret $12 million bonus that was paid to Pitchford Entertainment Media Magic, LLC. Wade believes that this transaction is real and that the money should have been put towards paying Gearbox employees and funding the development of the next Borderlands, which Pitchford has clearly been teasing recently.
Callender also claims in his lawsuit that Randy Pitchford lost a USB back in 2014 that contained several sensitive legal documents and that “upon information and belief, Randy Pitchford’s USB drive also contained Randy Pitchford’s personal collection of ‘underage’ pornography”. He also says Randy has held parties where “adult men have reportedly exposed themselves to minors, to the amusement of Randy Pitchford.”
These allegations are disgusting if true, though Gearbox is actively denying all of Wade Callender’s claims with the following statement:
“The allegations made by a disgruntled former employee are absurd, with no basis in reality or law. We look forward to addressing this meritless lawsuit in court and have no further comment at this time.”
No matter which side is being truthful, there is clearly some illegal foul play going on surrounding Gearbox that may tarnish the developer and publisher’s reputation. If these lawsuits amount to anything more notable, DualShockers will let you know.
