May 16, 2019 officially marked the 17th anniversary of Final Fantasy XI. Final Fantasy XI, also known as Final Fantasy XI: Online, is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, or MMORPG, for short. Developed and published by Square it was released on May 16, 2002, for PS2 and later released for Microsoft Windows PC in November of that same year. Final Fantasy XI was the first MMORPG to cross platforms between PC and PS2 and was the Xbox 360’s first MMORPG.
It’s been almost two decades since this game was released, and it doesn’t feel that way at all as the game still has an active playerbase. Since the game is quite old you would think there wouldn’t be anything new to add, but it’s the exact opposite. New content is being added to the game on a regular basis, and that’s the type of support for games I love seeing.
Producer of Final Fantasy XI Akihiko Matsui wrote a letter to fans not only thanking them for their support but informing players about the installation process receiving a little makeover:
“In concrete terms, we have fully revamped the installer program, the very first experience that newcomers have when stepping into Vana’diel. We hope that this will make FINAL FANTASY XI seem less daunting when first going about the installation process, making for a much more modern experience, and we can confidently say that installing FFXI has never been easier.”
With just three years until its 20th anniversary, I’m excited to see what Square Enix has in store for the game, or if they plan to announce something new altogether.
