As far as FIFA 21 promos go in Ultimate Team, there isn’t really anything that tops Team of the Year. Sure, the chances of actually packing one of those players are essentially nil; however, the excitement of the event is almost without parallel. For my money, the only promo that gets close is Future Stars because it’s one of the few chances I have to get boosted American players. That said, TOTY is the event everyone saves packs for. It’s the most high-profile promo, giving you a shot at end-game players in January. And voting kicked off today, which means that the TOTY squad is likely coming next Friday.

As always, the TOTY vote in FIFA 21 lets you select one goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders, and three attackers. So, sadly you can’t be a troll and just have a team of keepers. For the most part, it’s the names you’d expect given the past 12 months, but there is at least one glaring omission. Lets’s take a look.
At keeper, you can choose between Alisson, Thibault Courtois, Ederson, Lukas Hradecky, Steve Mandanda, Keylor Navas, and Manuel Neuer. Personally, I’m picking Neuer. Alisson maybe has a chance, but Neuer is the guy I’d most want between the sticks.
Next is defenders, where most of the usual names show up. I won’t list them all because it’d take forever, but here are a few that I think have a shot at winning. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, and Virgil van Dijk all made the team last year, and it’s not like Liverpool has slowed down. Big Virg has been injured for most of this season, so I could see him being replaced. Outside of those three, I think Sergio Ramos and Alphonso Davies are the most likely selections. Both of them have been deadly at top clubs all of 2020 and deserve a spot in the team. For me personally, I’m really hoping Theo Hernandez squeezes it, but that seems incredibly unlikely.
Midfield is equally stacked, but missing at least one key player. For the life of me, I don’t know why Thomas Muller wasn’t included. I don’t know if he’d win, but I think he deserves a chance given some of the other names in the voting. As far as big names, I think Bruno Fernandes, Kevin de Bruyne, and Joshua Kimmich will walk away with this one. Guys like Jordan Henderson, Heung Min Son, and Thiago have a shot as well. And, I’d love to see Alejandro Gomez make it, but that’s not happening.
Finally, the attacking options. Here’s where things get very interesting. While I suspect I can guess at least two players who will make the team, there are so many valid options. We can all probably agree that Kylian Mbappe and Robert Lewandowski will be in. Or, at least they should be. Then, you have guys like Mo Salah, Neymar, Lionel Messi, Sadio Mane, and Cristiano Ronaldo fighting for that last slot. And I’m not even including players like Romelu Lukaku and Erling Braut Haaland. Truly, It’s going to be a knock-down, drag-out fight.
Fortunately, we’ll know soon. I would’ve expected TOTY to come next week, but voting is open until January 18. So, expect TOTY to hit packs sometime after that date. FIFA 21 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Head to the official site to make your vote heard.
