Ultimate Team in FIFA 20 kicked off its fifth season today. Each season includes its very own battle pass-like list of rewards along with tons of new objectives for players to tackle. This season also marks the beginning of the third round of Icon Swaps, which is a way for players to earn coveted Icon players through gameplay. There is quite a bit to get through with the beginning of a new season, so give it all a gander below.
As always, this season’s battle pass-like set of rewards comes with a ton of cosmetics and packs. It’s hard to top the adorable puppy Tifo from season four, but there’s a few in here that are nearing that level of cuteness overload. Plus, those dinosaurs are pretty rad. You’ll also get to test out a few Prime Icon Moment players in form of Maldini and Del Piero loans. But, of course, the biggest addition to the game will be the new Storyline players.
For this American, the inclusion of Josh Sargent is amazing. He’s quickly become a fan favorite in the national team fanbase. Seeing him finally get a special card is a treat. Joining him in the first tier of Storyline Players are Morten Thorsby from Sampdoria and Daizen Maeda from Maritimo. In the top tier, players can earn either Andrea Belotti from Torino, Fred from Manchester United, or Yannick Carrasco from Atletico Madrid. Interestingly, that means two players from Italy’s Serie A and none from the German Bundesliga. Personally, I’m not too excited about the upper-tier players. That said, if they fit your team, it’ll be a fun grind to get them. Of course, by the time you get these players, it’ll be mid-April, so who knows if they’ll be worth fitting into your team by then.
Outside of the new battle pass, Icon Swaps Round 3 is definitely a major development in FIFA 20 land today. There are a ton of great players available here if you have the time and skill to grind out wins. At the very top of the list is a Baby version of Zinedine Zidane. This is the cheapest version of the Frenchman and it’s going to take a long time to get him. That said, he can be completely game-changing depending on your current lineup.
Joining him at the top end of Swaps are Prime Garrincha, Prime Icon Moments Carlos Alberto, and Prime Icon Moments Fabio Cannavaro. A few of the other notables include Prime Kaka, Mid Diego Maradona, and Baby Ruud Gullit. All told, there are 21 players for you to choose from. You, of course, can’t get all of them. EA only offers limited tokens for you to grind for, but there are a few spicy choices in this set of Icon Swaps. Unfortunately, you can’t just grind out all the tokens you want right now. EA has only made 12 tokens available, with more to come later. For reference, Zidane will run you 23 tokens. That said, if you want the worst version of Gullit this weekend, you could totally grind it all out.
Obviously, FIFA 20 still has a ton of problems. The servers have been in-and-out for weeks and EA continues to make questionable decisions. However, as someone who actually likes to play the game instead of just the menus, a new season finally gives me something to do. And, with so many people working from home for the next few weeks, that’s a great thing to have.
FIFA 20 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The game is technically available on Nintendo Switch. However, it’s missing most of the features you want there.
