After over a decade working on Ubisoft properties such as Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Splinter Cell, Dean Evans, who is likely most well-known for his role in creating Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, has departed from the company.
Game Informer reported the news of Evans’ departure and said that he was in the process of working on a new project at Ubisoft before it was shelved. After this occurred, Ubisoft gave Evans the opportunity to join the editorial leadership group at the company, but he instead decided it was simply his time to move onto something new.
Evans spoke a bit about his decision to leave the company, which seemed more like a mid-life decision and less about any issues stemming directly from Ubisoft.
“I split with my wife, and then the project I was working on was canceled. All of this massive s— going on at the same time and I started thinking, ‘Is the best option for me to move to another foreign country?’ I’m 40 this year, and it’s so f—ing cliche, but you do think about it in the same way you do when you turn 30. These milestones, you start thinking about what you really want to be doing and whether you’re making the right decision.”
Evans says that in the fallout of his leaving, he will be moving back to the United Kingdom and will be spending some of his free time traveling. As for what might be next for him, he says that when he inevitably gets back into the game making business, he thinks he’s gonna try something a bit riskier.
“A lot of people have been complaining about the triple-A business and the lack of risk taking, that I’d be a total f—ing hypocrite if I moved forward and didn’t take any risks. So f— it, I think I might go out and set up my own studio and see where that goes.”
Whatever the future might hold for Dean, I’m excited to see what he ends up doing next. His past projects have been some of the most unique that Ubisoft has put out over the last decade, so hopefully, that same spirit will influence his future work.
