Fighting game community rejoice! The Evo 2020 game lineup has been revealed, with a few notable surprises that will make for an interesting event.
During the recent Evo Twitch stream, Evo co-founder Joey Cuellar and competitive fighting game player Mike Ross revealed the Evo 2020 game lineup, which consists of eight recent fighting games and one very old one. Here is the full list:
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
- Street Fighter V: Championship Edition
- Tekken 7
- Dragon Ball FighterZ
- Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late[cl-r]
- Soul Calibur VI
- GranBlue Fantasy Versus
- Samurai Shodown
- Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Marvel vs. Capcom 2’s inclusion on the main stage is the biggest surprise of the bunch. Released back in 2000, the tournament will celebrate the popular team fighting game’s 20th anniversary. The “20urnament of Champions” will have a total of eight players, four of which were MvC2 champions from previous Evo events.
Evo 2020 will be at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada from July 31 – August 2. If you think you have what it takes to be a champion in any of these games, registration is open right now. If not, well, there will be plenty of matches to watch during the three day period.
Personally, I think this is a solid list of games to feature at Evo 2020. It is especially great to see “smaller” titles like Samurai Shodown and Under Night In-Birth get on the big stage again. Similarly to Samurai Shodown during Evo 2019, having GranBlue Fantasy Versus included during its release year will be good publicity for that game, especially for western audiences who have never heard of the GranBlue franchise.
The one game I thought was a shoo-in was Mortal Kombat 11. With it winning “best fighting game” awards at multiple outlets, it seemed only natural for it to find its way back to Evo. I’m a bit sad, but the Evo 2020 lineup is interesting, and I will surely be watching.
