While Esports continue to be a growing industry within the world of gaming, few competitive events capture the world’s attention as much as the annual Evo that brings together the world’s best fighting game players across multiple events. Ahead of this year’s installment coming in August, the official lineup of games that players can expect to spectate have been revealed, with a few surprises.
The official list of games in competition at Evo 2019 have been revealed heading into this year’s tournament in August, and the competing titles can be found below:
- Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st]
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
- Dragon Ball FighterZ
- BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle
- Tekken 7
- Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition
- Soulcalibur VI
- Mortal Kombat 11
- Samurai Shodown
This year’s roster features many of the titles that players would have come to expect from the inclusion of last year’s breakout title Dragon Ball FighterZ, to Soulcalibur VI, to the upcoming Mortal Kombat 11, alongside mainstays of the tournament like Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition and Tekken 7.
However, the most glaring omission of the lineup by far is the exclusion of Super Smash Bros. Melee, which is the first time that the game has been left out of the Evo lineup since 2013. Instead, it appears that the tournament will be retiring Melee (at least this time around) to instead put the focus on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which released this past December and would mark the game’s first showing at the event. In Evo 2018, the series was represented by both Melee and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
While the omission of Melee marks a big departure from past Evo events–especially given that the 18-year-old title has continued to be one of the most popular fighting games still around–the year’s event seems to be giving an opportunity for some new blood to take the stage, as only four of games chosen for this year’s competition are being carried over from the previous event.
Evo 2019 will take place from August 2-4, 2019 in Las Vegas, NV at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.
