The fall season is always a competitive one for video games, but you could argue that 2018 is more fierce than usual. Following incredibly strong releases from both Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and Red Dead Redemption 2 this past weekend, it seems like it might be harder for new releases to grab their own share of the market than in the past.
Despite this, EA doesn’t seem worried about their own launch of Battlefield 5 next month as expressed in today’s quarterly financial call. When asked by an investor whether or not the company was potentially worried that most gamers would be spending their money on games now instead of next month, EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson responded with confidence regarding next month’s release.
His full response to the question was as follows:
“In terms of our confidence in the Battlefield 5 launch, with respect to other things that have happened in the industry, I think the industry is vibrant and growing and we couldn’t be more excited for our Battlefield 5 launch. As I said in the prepared remarks, we’ve still got over 10 million players in our existing Battlefield games that we are in direct communication with as we go into launch. Battlefield has a tremendously rich and robust community who love those ‘only in Battlefield‘ moments. We’re [not only] coming out with strong multiplayer, strong single-player, but also a tremendous live service with content that’s free for all players in the months and years to come. So I think we feel good about that even in the context of what have been some other strong launches and I think that’s additive to what we’re going to do there.”
Even though it is a busy fall window, Battlefield fans will still likely show up in droves on launch day. Historically, Battlefield has always sold very well for EA and as Wilson points out in his statement, the community surrounding Battlefield is still 10 million strong. As for whether or not it’ll surpass sales of previous entries in the series remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt that it will still perform well at market regardless of the final sales numbers.
Battlefield 5 is slated to launch next month for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on November 20. If you’d like to pre-order your own copy ahead of that time, you can still head on over to Amazon to do so.
