Square Enix confirmed via the FAQ on Dragon Quest XI‘s official site that Dragon Quest XI S, which now isn’t a Switch exclusive anymore, will be the exact same game on the other platforms it’s ported to. The only difference will be technical performance and graphics.
Moreover, PS4 players already had access to the original Dragon Quest XI. Well, they won’t be able to buy the content from S via DLC, and will have to buy the game full price again. For those who care about trophies, you’ll have to earn them all again too. Xbox players are getting Dragon Quest for the first time ever, so the pill is easier to swallow for them.
I personally didn’t expect otherwise. Atlus, Square Enix, and more Japanese companies do that all the time when it comes to enhanced versions. There are a few exceptions, but this definitely is the norm. Now, on whether it’s a good thing or not? I think anyone can draw their own conclusions. Dragon Quest is a literal religion in Japan though so you can be sure the conclusion drawn there will be “buy again no questions asked”. As of now, Dragon Quest XI (S) sold over 5.5 million copies.
If that can work as consolation; know that PS4, Xbox and Switch players are on the same page when it comes to missing Japanese exclusive content. Only the Japanese versions of Dragon Quest XI S include special Voice Drama DLCs. These are audio only stories focusing on the party members and the main characters, expanding the lore and universe. There are ten of them in total and you can find samples on Square Enix’ YouTube.
Dragon Quest XI initially launched simultaneously on PS4 and 3DS on July 29, 2017, in Japan. The 3DS version was never officially localized. Dragon Quest XI S then released on Switch worldwide in September 2019. It was also the very first Square Enix and Third-party game revealed for Nintendo Switch. So its release was pretty iconic and emotional. DQXI S is an ultimate version mixing both the features of the PS4 and the 3DS versions, alongside new content. This means you can enjoy the game either with HD graphics or with an old-school 2D atmosphere.
Dragon Quest XI S (review) launches on PS4, Xbox one, Xbox Game Pass, Windows 10, and Steam on December 4, 2020.
