The Dragon Quest series was one of the earliest juggernauts in the gaming industry and it still continues to maintain momentum all these years later, even in the west. That has become clearer than ever as Square Enix has revealed that Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, the latest game in the series, surpassed 5.5 million copies sold.
This number accounts for all platforms as well as both Japanese and western sales. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age initially came out in Japan for both PS4 and 3DS in 2017. Only the PS4 version managed to make it westward in 2018 alongside a worldwide PC release. Finally, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition, a Nintendo Switch port that combines elements from the 3DS and PS4 releases, came out in all territories back in September. The game’s re-release seems to have been what pushed it over the edge to hit this milestone.
Yuji Horii, the mastermind behind the Dragon Quest series, commemorated Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age’s success with a statement of his own. “I strongly believe that this figure has only been achieved thanks to our fans who have always loved the Dragon Quest series and also the new players who discovered Dragon Quest or JRPGs through this title,” he said. “If I could ever go back in time to meet myself when I was still making the very first Dragon Quest, I would love to tell him, ‘In 30 years’ time, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age has been released and loved by international fans beyond seas and languages…Thank you very much to all the fans who have enjoyed the title.”
The series does not look like it will be ending anytime soon either, as Yuji Horii also mentioned that “I will carry on doing my very best to deliver further Dragon Quest titles to our fans worldwide.” Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age can be picked up for either PS4 or Nintendo Switch on Amazon.
