A Dino Crisis remake almost certainly tops the remake wishlists of many gamers. The series was created for Capcom by the legendary Shinji Mikami and is very much like Resident Evil but with dinosaurs. In the first game, playing as Regina, players are left in a secluded research facility that is being overrun by the prehistoric creatures. From there, they must fight their way through a range of atmospheric areas, solving puzzles and figuring out the mystery of the facility.
While the tone and gameplay were both similar to the Resident Evil games that came before it, Dino Crisis was noted to “enhance” the formula of the preceding titles and provide an exciting gameplay experience.
Dino Crisis Spiritual Successor – Instinction
So, while Capcom hasn’t released a new Dino Crisis title in around 18 years, New Zealand indie developers Hashbane have decided they’re going to do it themselves.
Titled Insitinction, the team themselves cheekily question “Is this the Spiritual Successor to Dino Crisis?” The game will offer players the opportunity to “Slay terrifying prehistoric creatures in this semi-open world epic, with immersive combat and exploration in multiple awe-inspiring natural locations, all while solving puzzles and completing campaigns.”
Instinction Features
The title is tentatively scheduled for a Q3, 2022 release date on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series S|X.
Players will have the opportunity to play in first or third-person modes in both single or multiplayer playthroughs. They will be tested with a variety of goals, aiming to “Complete objectives, find upgrades, uncover side quests and embark on an unforgettable journey.” Players will be able to choose from a range of weapons and playstyles, meaning each playthrough can be vastly different.
The game is aiming to take advantage of next-gen capabilities, capitalising on features such as ray-tracing. The developers will also be adding future support for 8k and 120fps gameplay.
Dino Crisis Remake – What does this mean?
While the development of Instinction isn’t likely to influence Capcom’s decision on a Dino Crisis remake, it’s still hard to gauge where they’re at.
Back in 2017, one of Capcom’s producers said that while they had “a hope for in my heart”, that Dino Crisis would return, there weren’t “currently any conversations happening [at Capcom], that I’m aware of.”
Back in 2019, things started looking up for Dino Crisis fans, however. In a briefing, Capcom said they’d planned to “awaken dormant intellectual properties”, then, later that year, they renewed the trademark for the Dino Crisis name. This gave fans something to grasp onto.
Sadly, since then, we’ve heard nothing. Hopefully the announcement of Instinction spurs Capcom into action, but at this point, not a lot has changed since 2019.
