Shintaro Kojima: I’ve got something to report. I resigned from Capcom. I will be eternally grateful to this wonderful company and its passionate, beautiful staff. Starting now, I will support Capcom not as an employee, but as a simple fan. Thank you for supporting me all these years. For now, I’m planning to take a break. I hope to make something interesting again soon.
In follow-up tweets, Shintaro Kojima thanked the fans who played his games over the years. He also mentioned he’ll be appearing at “certain places” so fans should say hi if they spot him. It’s unclear whether he’ll stay in the game industry or not.
Shintaro Kojima joined Capcom in 1998, working as a Game Planner on Street Fighter Zero 3. He was a Game Planner taking care of monsters on the Monster Hunter series from the very first game on PS2 in 2004 until Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on PSP in 2008. He was then promoted and become one of the producers of the series. Kojima was the producer of Monster Hunter Generations, which first launched on 3DS in 2015. An updated version titled Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate later released on 3DS, and was also ported to Nintendo Switch in 2018. In Japan, the game is known as Monster Hunter XX (pronounced Double Cross) and still has many players despite Monster Hunter World existing.
Shintaro Kojima was also the producer for E.X. Troopers on 3DS and PS3, and of the first Dai Gyakuten Saiban on 3DS. Dai Gyakuten Saiban are the Japan-exclusive Ace Attorney games taking place in the Meiji Era. A fan translation for Dai Gyakuten Saiban 1 is available, but Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2 is still only in Japanese.
Capcom is rolling in money nowadays after they released multiple awesome games this year like Devil May Cry 5 and the Resident Evil 2 remake. So I’m personally wondering why he decided to leave now. There probably isn’t a “bad” reason behind it and he simply decided to move on in life. In any case, we’ll be sure to tell you if Shintaro Kojima ends up joining another studio or announcing a new game, and I wish him all the best.
