Over the past week, details about the upcoming Borderlands movie have been making the internet rounds. The main point of discussion has been the numerous big-name actors who have signed onto the project. A-listers such as Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Hart, and Cate Blanchett are all attached. Today, it was announced that Jack Black would be joining the cast as the lovable robot Claptrap. It’s clear, however, that Jim Foronda, Claptrap’s voice actor in Borderlands 3, is disappointed with the casting.
Tweeting out simply, “Oh.” the voice actor is clearly unhappy with the casting decision. He clarified in the comments of his initial tweet that he “saw the announcement on [his] feed.” It seems as if he was not aware of the casting decision before it was announced.

Despite the numerous talents of Jack Black, Foronda has done an incredible job voicing the character, so it’s a shame that he won’t be attached to the project. His disappointment is completely understandable and speaks to a larger issue that’s been discussed within the gaming industry. Many talented voice actors are replaced by big-name stars when the property makes the jump from the console to the silver screen.
Foronda followed up his tweet with another congratulating Black on the role and clarifying his disappointment. He wrote, “I can’t lie— It’s a crushing disappointment. I’d thought about possibly being in the movie for years. I love Borderlands. I love Claptrap. It’s absolute joy to be his voice for the games. Congratulations, @jackblack, I know you must love him too. Please take good care of him.”

It’s unfortunate that Jim Foronda was looked over for Claptrap, but hopefully, Jack Black does the character justice and is able to fill the big shoes of Foronda.
